This six-day cycling journey through Shikoku centres on Kochi Prefecture’s mountainous and coastal regions, offering a structured yet flexible itinerary that balances physical activity with cultural and natural highlights. You’ll begin at Kochi Airport and cycle through the Reihoku area, noted for its mountain ranges and terraced rice fields, including a visit to the Yoshinobu Terraced Rice Fields in Motoyama. Interaction with local farmers provides insight into Japan’s agricultural practices, complemented by tasting handmade rice balls prepared by an award-winning family. The route includes significant elevation gains, demanding a good level of fitness and cycling experience.

You’ll traverse the Iya Valley, cycling along winding mountain roads and crossing the iconic Kazura Bridge, with opportunities to sample local cuisine such as Iya soba. The tour also features a ride around Lake Sameura and visits to the Setogawa Valley and Nakatsu Gorge, where you’ll encounter clear rivers, scenic valleys, and autumn foliage. Public transportation is used selectively to transfer between certain points, with bicycles transported in advance to maintain continuity in cycling activities. The journey includes visits to sake breweries and participation in a sustainable forestry coaster cutting experience, linking local culture with environmental awareness.

The Shikoku Karst and Tengu Highlands provide a contrasting landscape of limestone formations and grasslands at high altitude, where you’ll cycle along the so-called “road in the sky” and enjoy panoramic mountain views. The itinerary concludes with a coastal ride to Katsurahama Beach, featuring a short ferry crossing and a seafood lunch at Tataki Dojo, where you’ll witness the traditional grilling of bonito over straw fire. Throughout the trip, an English-speaking cycling guide and support vehicle ensure safety and logistical support, allowing you to focus on the ride and the cultural encounters along the way.
